It's been so long since I've posted. I'm so sorry! I've gone back to work part-time and over the summer it ended up being more like full-time. I was also a "single parent" with both kids since my hubby got a temp job out of state. This summer was crazy and hectic but we got a lot accomplished. Now that school is back in session for the kids and I'm getting my class schedule settled I can begin focusing on my shops again. I've just started retailing Clean B detergents. I've tried a lot of different kinds of detergents, both "momma made" and store bought. There are a lot of nice ones but none met my needs until Clean B. This stuff is wonderful! It's what I now use for all my laundry. I've got ridiculously hard water so I use the "super b" version but I don't need fabric softeners, color safe bleach or other additives. On rare occasions I do add an oxygen booster but it's not a necessity. When I first saw it I thought it was a bit pricey but it costs me less to use this since I don't need all the other additives and such. I've been using it since March and have only used store bought products when my Clean B was on backorder. There are literally over 100 scents to pick from so I have to decide which ones to carry in my Hyena Cart shop. I love really clean scents and personally used "Country Clothesline" or "Laundromat". I like scents like "baby powder" for diapers, although my son is getting a bit old for that now I think. Our clothes come out clean and smell wonderful plus a bonus is that our house smell nice too when the laundry is going. :)I have sample size bags listed too for those who'd like to try this without a big commitment. Retro Owls One Size Infant/Toddler

I have to say, when I saw this print I was not impressed. I only bought 1 yard of it because I just wasn't sure about it. Can I say WOW!! I sews up into the cutest diapers and they would be appropriate for both girls and boys.
This diaper is in the Etsy shop. It was created using the Sprout Snap OS diaper pattern from Doddlebee.com and I really like it. The pattern is simple but has lots of adjustment so you can get newborns into it as well as your toddler.
I turned this one into a pocket diaper so an insert will be needed but the pattern would make a cute as an AIO or fitted diaper. Oooh, I think it would be a cute swim diaper or trainer too. What do you think?

I just finished an order for an custom elementary sized diaper. I love doing these! Maybe that's because it's the size my son wears so I get a lot of ideas from these customs. I used the fall colors Ooga Booga, bamboo fleece, zorb and the softest dark chocolate brown Cuddle Dry microfleece I've ever felt. This diaper is so soft & squishy I almost kept it and made her another one, lol!

Some new things up for grabs

I listed a few new infant diapers on Etsy recently. Rainy Days fitted diapers in size 1 which fits from 6 to 18 pounds. I really love the way these came out. Ooga Booga is a very popular print right now and great for boys or girls. I used the Primary, Koi and Bright colorways for these. They cotton knit outers, a hemp/cotton hidden layer, cotton velour inners and the snap-in doubler is 2 layers of hemp/cotton topped with cotton velour. Spoil that newborn bottom~your sweet little newborn deserves it!

These are so cute the original set has already sold! I have plenty left though and will be listing some custom slots for other colorways later today.

I am also listing custom slots on Hyena Cart for both sizes. There will be several new items for babies and big kids in that stocking! That stocking will be on Saturday April 16 and previews will be going up from now until then so stop by and see what's new. :)

Cancer...it's a horrible disease that does horrible things to people and their families. It has many forms and doesn't care who it hurts. It strikes without warning. It has done it again. I'm including links to 2 blogs with better details.

Well, I've come to the decision that I'm really bored and need to sew and re-open my shops. It's really slow sewing right now so there will only be a few items added but I'm going to try to get things going again. I'm planning to re-open both shops on Monday 3/28. There won't be many items that use the serger unless they are already done because I'm not very good with my left foot yet. ;) I can, however, add a few cloth diapers and maybe some cloth wipes. We'll just see what road this takes me down.
I'm also re-opening the fabric shop. I think I can get fabrics cut now since I can prop my foot on a rolling desk chair so if you "sew your own" then please stop by and see what fabrics I can add to your collection.
I also want to sincerely thank you all for being so patient with this mess. I've learned to only walk 1 dog at a time and pay closer attention to the coon hound. (Yes, she ended up "walking" me which is how this all happened.)

OK, I tried using the computerized machine yesterday to work on some baby things for a friend. It seems to work ok for me. It's REALLY slow going though. Plus I can barely reach the ironing board so I need to figure out a better way to do that. Otherwise this seems to be a do-able solution for now. Nothing fancy will happen but at least I can work on a few things over the next couple of weeks.

I'm hoping to finish up the things for my friend today & I'll post a few pics if I do). I also got a new pattern for infant diapers that I think will be really nice for her. 2 sizes, simple construction, super easy to use...perfect for someone who has never even seen cloth diapers. I figure she's planning on using disposables but it never hurts to have a few cloth for those moments when no one remembered to grab a pack of dipes at the store. Maybe I'll even get her to convert to atleast part-time cloth. After all, cloth bums on new babies are super sweet. ;)

I've got finals 3 days this week but only for 2-3 hrs each so hopefully I can work on my samples for the Overnight Solutions & get them mailed off. I just need to practice using my left foot to run the machine. This should be interesting, lol!

Oh my! It IS broken...

Well the MRI has put a huge delay in my plans. It turns out that I really did number on this poor foot. We thought that it was a severe sprain and a possible chipped bone on the outside of my ankle. It really is a severe sprain with a crush break on the Talus bone (that's the bone inside that the leg bones "rest" on in simple terms).

Now I'm completely non-weight bearing for another 4 weeks. This means no sewing, cutting, or anything with that foot. I'm not to put it on the ground pretty much.

I've decided it's time to get creative. I have a machine that will do basic sewing & embroidery that's computerized. It will run without a foot pedal. I'm planning on practicing that to get a nice product and maybe sewing some infant diapers. I'm working out how to do more g-tube pads and the Overnight Solutions since the serger isn't computerized.

I'm starting with some baby things for a friend who is expecting her first baby in early May. I'm attempting this over the weekend so I'll know soon if this will work or not. Wish me luck!

"Down" time...

Well this foot injury is becoming more and more of a problem. It seems that the doctor isn't happy with the healing it's doing for the last 3 weeks and we're going to MRI it on Wednesday. If the MRI is ok then we start physical therapy and I will *possibly* get to start sewing a little. If the MRI isn't good then we'll be looking at surgery.

Personally, I just know it's going to be good ('cause I DON'T want surgery or the time off) so I'm cutting more g-tube pads and already have my samples cut to sew and send off for approval to license for Overnight Solutions. At this rate all the licensee slots will be filled and I'll be on the wait-list. *sigh*

At least finals are only on 2 days next week then I get a break from school for a week. See...there is a silver lining, lol!

It's so nice to get to sew. It's an amazing stress reliever for me. I finally finished a few different sets and got them listed.

Overnight Solutions!!
They are AWESOME!!! I love the options and the fit. They are so flexible too. With snaps, no snaps/pull up style, FOE waist & leg openings, fleece bands trimming out the waist & legs. Endless options if you sew! Licensees if you don't and yes I'm working on mine for the sizes 5-14.
Pictures of the ones I've finished will be up as soon as I figure out where the camera ran off to. (gotta love having kids some days, lol!)

Between being a full time student and a more than full time mom I haven't been sewing much....until this weekend! YAY!! I've got just a bit of finish work & photos left to do then I'll be adding 2 boy sets, 2 girl sets and 2 neutral sets of g-tube pads to the shop. If you look closely at the photo you can get a sneak peek at the patterns available too. ;)

The title says it all, lol! For those who don't already know...I started college full time again in September. WOW, I forgot how intense it can be. ;) I'm getting back into the groove again and now I can start sewing. Since I started back I've only been doing custom orders but now I'm mailing out the last one today and starting to sew for my shops and family. YAY!! Sorry I'm late posting this. It's been crazy here.
Everyone who's purchased something should have their items. All custom orders are completed and shipped. YAY!!
I'm working on a few new items for each shop. I've also ordered more cotton knits and I'm going to add a few prints to the adult line.
I'm doing the birdeye style in cotton knit so they look & feel more like the undies you buy in your local "Mart" store. (Better quality of course!) They will still have the absorbent core and hook & loop or snap open sides. Now they will have hidden elastic at the waist & leg. Waterproof fabrics are also still available-just use the contact seller to have a custom order set up.
Sorry guys but I have only found "girly" and "little boy" prints right now so men's non-white absorbent undies will be a bit longer. I can, however, do them in solid colors if you don't want white.

Broken Laptop...sick family...Grrrrrrrrr!!

Well, my wonderful laptop has broken. It's still usable (sort of) so I can get on the internet but I'm rather limited. I'm almost done with the new job (last day is Sunday) so my weekends will open up which frees more weekday time for sewing (YAY!!).
Both kids went back to school and ended up with 102.5 fevers! Needless to say we're all sick now and this stinks but we're also on antibiotics so should be better soon.

As many of you already know I really like this new product called DiaperMaker Zorb. It's for the absorbent hidden layer in diapers, trainers and absorbent undies. It's trim and when paired with a fleece or microfiber it holds quite a bit but still dries rather quickly.

I've known it is a man-made fiber product but never what is really in it. It turns out that it's a blend of bamboo fibers, cotton fibers and polymicrofibers. So basically it's my 3 favorite soaker fibers all shredded and "squished" together (for lack of a better word, lol).

This article from All About Cloth Diapers goes into a bit more detail but I'll post a bit of it here so you can see what I'm talking about. Be sure to click the link and read the entire article. It makes me more comfortable about using the product on my son and selling items with it in it.

Look at what's new...

I'm adding 2 new items to my stores.

The first is a side opening PUL cover for elementary sized kids. (I'm still working on larger sizes but they're coming too.)

My other new item is a "Big Kid Onsie". This will be a semi-custom item so they'll take about 2 weeks to complete and mail but I LOVE them for my son.
They will be available in sizes 4 to 14. I have 2 styles of sleeves...raglan or traditional set in style. I'm adding a g-tube access pocket if you want one (no extra charge either). The leg openings can also be cut higher if preferred but I like the lower cut over diapers. I also prefer the raglan because they are more comfy for the kids and easier to get over the kiddo's noggin. ;)
I'll need some measurements for the child's body length and chest width for each one. The buyer can pick the body & sleeve fabrics. I'll coordinate the rest.

These will be in all 3 stores. I'm going ahead and previewing them in the Hyena Cart store and on the Congo. They will go up in the Etsy shop later in the week. If you want one from the Etsy shop just convo me and I'll do a custom listing for you.

ABC is now OPEN!!

Amazing Baby Creations is now open on Hyena Cart. This congo (think mini-mall or strip mall) is group of several different online stores. We cater to babies, toddlers, moms and I'll be doing all the same kinds of things for special needs that I've always done and some new things too.
I'm adding larger sized bodysuit style shirts for kids up to size 14. I've got a cover listed now that fits most elementary sized kiddos if you still need cloth diapers or use training undies that aren't waterproof. These would be great to cover the rump for bedwetters. It's just a simple cover that can be wiped clean and reused a few times before needing washed.
I now have 3 online stores. They are my Etsy, my Hyena Cart and I'm also a part of Amazing Baby Creations Congo.
I'm planning on keeping similar items in each store but there will be different prints and I will have different custom options in each store. There will also be store specific items sometimes just to mix it up. :)
There are a lot of Free For Shipping items listed in the different stores too right now. I've listed nursing pads and there are soaps, wipes, diapers and lots more. All you have to do is enter and if the system picks your entry you get the item for the cost of shipping only! You can enter until the 18th at noon so stop in and enter for some really cute stuff!

Well, I got an email this morning that our Congo is closing for awhile. I do wish I had more time there but as it happens it's already been closed.

However, I moved all my stock to my Hyena Cart shop so everything will still be available. I have a few adult sized birdseye briefs ready to ship and some really cute stuff done so take a peak.

I'm getting ready to get things rearranged since my SIL is in labor and MIL will be staying with her soon. I've got a few new brands that will be in the shop too.

I'm in the process of getting my LaDiDa diapers approved. I'm sewing up some trainers called Overnight Solutions (larger sizes of the Tinkle Time Trainer) and some of my pattern as well. I'm also looking into Very Baby just because I'd love to have a one-sized diaper in the shop. I've got some of each out and partially sewn so the biggest part is taking lots of clear pictures and paying the licensing fees then everything will be available in the Etsy and Hyena Cart shops! It's a really exciting time for me & I can't wait to offer these wonderful items.

YEA!! It's been almost 2 months coming and honestly, I don't have as much in there as I'd hoped but there are custom slots for diapers, g-tube and nursing pads that are ready to ship and some fabric yardage I just need to find a new home for. I will be listing both ready made/ready to ship and custom items. I also plan on continuing to add more and do a "stocking" every 10 to 15 days. All items "go live" (can be purchased) at 11 am EST on Tuesday the 11th!

Another passing and delay

Well, the plan was to open the Hyena Cart store this weekend. It's going to be another week or so. We've had a passing in my husband's family and I've been preoccupied with all the things that go along with helping my husband and his mom deal with her sister's death. It's been coming for quite a while but you still have much to deal with and work through when a loved one passes. The funeral was yesterday so that part is finished.
I will try to get some things created so I can get this store open asap. Thanks for understanding!

OK, I've decided to start thinning Boo's stash. After all nearly none of it fits and there are a few things that should be passed on to keep other little ones bums happy.
I opened a Hyena Cart store then I found "Spot's Corner". It's a place to sell off your gently used items! YEA!!! So anyway I have to wonderfully loved wool soakers that Penny hand knit for me a few years ago (thanks again!). There's just now way to make them fit him any longer so I listed both for sale there.
If you know anyone who can use them, please send them over here and here. They are both large/x-large so probably about 24mths-3T give or take. I put measurements in so you can check over your kiddo's best padded bum. :)

I’ve been going back through my blog and I realized that I’ve never done this so here goes. Who am I and what brought me to making and selling diapers and special needs items.
Who is the “Suzanne” in Suzanne’s Special Kids?
I’m a late 30’s mom of 2 wonderful kids. Both of them are challenged but in very different ways. My oldest is extremely bright, high IQ, and is an Aspie. She has OCD tendencies, ADHD tendencies, and sensory issues. She loving and wonderful and turning 14 so becoming an independent young lady. The tendencies she shows makes her a bit challenging as does the fact that she is now a teenager.  My youngest is multiply challenged on the other end of the rainbow. He has so many physical and cognitive challenges yet he has the most gentle and loving personality. I am first and foremost a mother. It’s all I ever really wanted to do. I love to sew. I got this from my mother and her mother who both sewed regularly. Now I have the opportunity to provide options to other mothers with challenged children. This makes my passion well worth it.
I also love to read, cook and bake. I picked up a love of gardening from my grandmother and I always have plants inside and out. I am a Christian and very proud of that. I believe that God doesn’t make bad things happen to people but he does sometimes allow them so that we may grow. I believe that children like my son are born different so we may be reminded of what pure love is. I am honest, trustworthy, and humbled that God chose me to care for 2 of his precious souls. I’m happy to be a mom and wishing for more.
Why do I sew cloth diapers?
I used cloth diapers part time for my oldest because they just weren’t that easy to use. When I got pregnant with my son I found the PooPockets pattern. I loved the idea of a “one size” diaper. Birth to potty training all in one…YEA!! Just add a few pairs of plastic pants or wool covers and diapering is done. That pattern is so quick to sew and uses easy to find fabrics. I fell in love with making them and how cute they look. The creative process just took over. I could use any soft flannel and have unique cute diapers that were easy to care for. The best part was that I only had to pay for them ONCE! No buying more every few days and throwing them in the trash after each use. I began buying other patterns and drafting my own. I think I printed off every free pattern on the web! LOL!! If you love cute baby bums and even tolerate sewing….this is addictive!
Why sew with special needs in mind?
At my 20 week ultrasound we were given some challenging news. Our baby has congenital hydrocephalus. He may or may not have spina bifida. We were sent to see a few specialist and my journey into the world of special needs began. Our son will be born at 30 weeks with parts of his brian never forming. He will have cerebral palsy, epilepsy and lung disease among many other issues. It is a learning process every day. My designs are based on what works or doesn’t work for my son. Many of my testers will never see anything but my son’s bum…they aren’t all wonderful. ;) Every so often…one really works. It fits well, absorbs wonderfully, washes thoroughly, and dries in a decent amount of time. For me…that’s the perfect diaper. I really like 1 piece items since issues with high tone during a diaper change make it hard to get things fastened sometimes. I look at our challenges when diapering and use them to work toward the perfect diaper.
What made me choose toddler sizes and larger?
I’m usually up for making some wonderful itty bitty diapers so feel free to ask. However, I decided there are so few options for toddlers and larger. My son is now in kindergarten and wearing little boys clothes-not from the toddler section anymore. The options are, well, not that great. I will continue to redesign my patterns to fit as my little guy grows. I have patterns for newborn all the way up to 2XL.
I know that kids and adults alike will need undies. Just because their body gets larger doesn’t mean they can always use the potty. More likely than not, my son will always need absorbent undies. I prefer that phrase to diapers. “Diapers” just seem so babyish and he’s a big boy now. Besides, adults don’t wear diapers…they are absorbent briefs or tabbed briefs or something like that. It’s about preserving dignity and being respectful.
What are my favorite fabrics and why?
I’ve tried sooo many fabrics. I am currently in love with a bamboo/hemp blend. It’s super soft, highly absorbent and just a wonderful diaper and undies fabric. It stays soft when line dried and doesn’t hold odors. Honestly, I love most fabrics so this is a difficult question to answer. I still love cotton flannels, hemp/cotton fleece, and the old standby… cotton birdseye weave. I have really begun to love wool. I know, when most people hear “wool” they think “itchy!”. That is deceptive because it becomes itchy based on how it is spun and processed. I have a wonderful supplier, Jeanne, at Natures Fabrics. She carries only the best, softest wools. You’ll never believe it’s wool, honestly! I’ve had my mom rub it on her arm (she allergic, btw) with NO REACTION. It’s all in the way it’s spun and processed. I thought it was time to list a few posts with tips I’ve learned over the years while cloth diapering my kids. Today I’m starting with washing tips.
There are lots of ways to wash your cloth diapers. Lots of detergents, homemade laundry soaps, tips for the type of washer you have, people who say you “must” do this or that. Honestly, I think simple is better. I mean we do this for a lot of reasons and one of them is usually to be “greener” which means less water and chemicals to me.
I’ve tried just about every kind of “off the shelf” detergent at our local Mart and grocery stores. Honestly, our water is so hard that there wasn’t much difference for us. Off the shelf, I do prefer Purex Free & Clear or All Free & Clear. The free & clear detergents tend to rinse more thoroughly the first time thus not requiring a second rinse for us. I use an oxygen bleach if I think about it a few times a month. Sun makes a reasonably priced one that works well.
By far my favorite detergent is soapnuts liquid. I make it 2-3 times a month by boiling about 15 soapnuts in 7 cups of water for 30 minutes. I add a few drops of tea tree oil for it’s antibacterial properties and viola! Laundry soap that is perfect for all the wash you do. Whatever type of soap you use…just be sure to use ½ less in your diapers.
Here’s a run down of how I store and wash Boo’s diapers.
 I use a dry pail. I dump any solid waste into the toilet before putting the diaper in the pail. I now own a diaper sprayer but still don’t use it often…it’s just not a necessity for me. I do put tea tree oil on a scrap of flannel or baking soda sprinkled into the pail to help with odors. I just toss it all into the washer when it’s time to wash.
 I do un-stuff my DS’s pocket style diapers if I remember. Sometimes they won’t do it themselves in the washer. :)
 I wash every 3-4 days. I just dump the pail in the washer and run a cold rinse cycle. This takes care of any solid waste that I missed. I also like to add an enzyme treatment like Totally Toddler, OUT (same stuff), or BacOut if I have one. If I use it I will fill the washer and let it sit for a few minutes before I run the rinse cycle the rest of the way.
 I wash on the longest hottest wash my machine does with a single cold rinse at the end. I have a top loader so I fill the load completely and only rinse once unless absolutely necessary. This saves a bit of water since it hold so much.
 I love to line dry them if it’s warm enough out. The sun does wonders to remove stains and kill bacteria.
 If it’s not seasonally appropriate to line dry then I set the dryer on hot and dry for 60-70 minutes. I have a mix of flannel pockets and bamboo/hemp fleece so the longer time works to get them dry. If for some reason they aren’t I also own one of those folding laundry racks so I’ll drape them over it to finish. They’re about $15 bucks & great for all damp stuff, plus they are easy to store since they fold flat.
 Toss in a basket or drawer…no need to fold unless you want to pre-stuff your pockets. I’m lazy…I do that when I grab it to use it. Now that wasn’t not so hard was it. ;D

Embroidery and the new stash!

I'm am so excited! I finally got my embroidery machine fixed and now I can embellish diapers and clothing again. :D

I've been thinking about how to best create & embellish undies for our special family members. I know for my son, fitted diapers with separate covers tend to work best but for our school & caregivers I need AIO's. This means that since it's time for a new stash anyway, I will make both styles in his new larger size. I still love the fit of the Rita's Rump Pocket so that's going to be our fitted style. I'm still debating between 2 AIO styles that both work well for us. I have my pattern that has been redesigned & resized and I have the KCK One larger sizes pattern. All 3 will be wonderful with some embroidery on the front or back. I love seeing my son in unique clothing that is made with love. Besides, when I make it...it actually fits. :)

Just search "etsyclothdiaper embroidery" and you can see how cute cloth diapers are when they have some embroidery. (That's just a sample of what can be done.) Lots of us have cute characters or designs on our undies so why shouldn't our special family members. I'm excited to get all the different characters off my machine and on the undies & clothes I'm working on.

I'll be adding them to some of the ones I'm listing as well. I think putting them on undies and also on the covers will make them extra special, don't you?

New Undies!

Well, I'm still loving the Rita's Rump diaper pattern so I just had to re-size it again. I'm pretty happy with it so if a few more samples work for Boo then it will begin listing in both Etsy and StalkShops by the end of February.

I plan to make flannel & knit versions plus trial packs that are a few diapers and a wool cover since they won't be waterproof. It has been re-sized to fit approximately35-50 pounds (21-22" rise) and I'm working on one that will fit 50+ pounds with a 23-24" rise.

My biggest question right now is should they be pockets or fitteds? I'm not sure. Fitteds may be simpler since they are already stuffed but pockets would make them less expensive, quicker to wash & dry, and more flexible because you can use different inserts based on need.

I've just opened a new shop in a handmade venue! The venue is StalkShop.com/ . It's got the potential to be a wonderful place to find handmade quality items. It's a great way to help keep some of our small businesses going and support our American families. I try to buy US made whenever I can and even prefer "mommy made" if I can.
I know I can probably make it myself but why do I always need to. There are a lot of other seamstresses who can use the cash and I just don't always have the time or energy. It's a win-win situation.

Slow sewing...

Well I'm cutting and pinning and even creating new youth diaper patterns. You see no sewing listed...umm well that's because the machine ended up in the shop. I do have the serger still and the "diaper" sewing machine is here but they are buried in my closet. There have been a few emergency changes here so the sewing room is now our bedroom (long story...if you're curious just go to my family blog for the basics).

I'm still working on setting up a sewing place so I figure this was a good a time as any for the machine to need fixing. Any way I'm going to work on sewing diapers and serging g-tube pads over the next week. Life happens and I just work with what I'm handed. :)

A New Year and A New Shop!

I'm finally ready to re-open my Etsy shop. I will be starting slow and will only take on minimal custom orders right now but I am finally able to start sewing again!

I am making a few changes too. I will be streamlining my fabrics including the prints. I'm going to be using primarily bamboo based fabrics or cotton birdseye and Zorb for the extra boosting power. (I really love that stuff!) I also plan on adding wool blend covers and PUL covers.

I won't be doing KCK Ones right now. My license is expired so I do not have the right to sell them. (If they are your preferred style, please check the KCK One website for a licensed seamstress.) I have other patterns I have used for years with great success so I'm sticking with them for now.

I will be listing the last of the flannel prints I have shortly and I'm probably going to list some fabrics for bulk sale so if you like to sew your own then I've got some fabrics for you!

Please bear with me as I slowly get back into the swing of things. I'm planning on making this new shop a much bigger thing than ever before so I'm working into this and all the new legal requirements carefully and taking my time.

I can't wait to start working with you all again!

Too much going on....

Well our trip dates are Nov 2-8. Both kids have the flu (thank God for Tamiflu!) and I don't know if I'm even going to be able to re-open the shop. Boo's health is stable but he's requiring so much more care now that he's getting bigger. I do have help for 2 hours 3 afternoon's a week but Gracie is in several very challenging classes that take up that "extra" time I hoped to have. I suppose I'm just going to wait it out and see. "Chicken Spots"

Guess what....the varicella vaccine has a rather rare side effect. One can actually get the chicken pox...now there is only a 1-in 100 (or something like that) chance though many kids get 5-10 spots. Well Boo was required to get the vaccine to start kindergarten so I took him and HE GOT THE CHICKEN POX! So he got to attend for 2 days then stay home for a week. He's going back today though he still doesn't feel all that great. He's in the life skill class so they can let him sleep if he gets too grumpy.
Now I'm behind again so we've had to push back the re-opening again. We will also be taking a break later for about 2 weeks because Boo has been granted a wish from the Make-A-Wish foundation!! We're taking him to Disney World. Hopefully this trip will go better than last time we went to Florida...long story short...that's when Boo had his first seizure-at the airport as we are getting on the plane. Mom & Dad continued to Florida and Boo, Gracie and I went to St. Vincent Hospital. We did get there a day & a half later but we missed doing some of Gracie's birthday stuff since the trip was cut short. Still it was nice to get away...that was 4 years ago. Now he's old enough to enjoy it so we're going back. I'll post the trip dates when I know. Have a great day everyone!

It's August already!

Boo is doing a bit better post surgery. He should get to start school on the 12th with everyone else. Gracie is also ready to get back to school though her nerves are getting to her. I personally can't wait for school to start so I can get a bit of sewing done.
I'm still hoping for a mid-August reopening. We have several post-op follow-up appointments to go to before I can make it "official" but it looks promising. :)
Due to the CPSIA legislation I will be doing a lot of reworking things in my shop. I'm still working on being able to make things for those 12 and under. I think I've got the rules figured out so I just need to figure out how to make them workable in my situation. I also know that I will be doing very few custom orders for now. They just take a lot of time I don't have right now. Like I said before though, if you need something PLEASE let me know and I'll see if I can help you out.
I am also going to start selling off my extra supplies-the colors of PUL I know I can't use at home. If you can use diaper making supplies then keep checking back once I get re-opened. They will be at my cost (or very close) plus shipping. I just want someone to be able to use them. Thanks for your patience & understanding everyone!

Well, Boo is having surgery on Wednesday so my goal of re-opening on August 1 is a bust. I've moved the tentative date to mid-August. Sorry everyone but my family has to come first. I know there are some who are waiting for me to do some custom items and I will do my best to get things moving again soon. I will, however, be cutting my line back a bit more and rarely doing custom orders. That said if there is something you need or just want please let me know when I re-open. I will see what I can do. Temporary Closing...

I'm trying to keep this blog related to the shop and my personal "stuff" on my personal blog. However, at this point in time they are overlapping. I know there are some people who read both and others who just keep track of 1 so I'm going to keep in short n sweet on this one and go into more detail on My Quirky Family.
I have closed the shop until approximately August 1. Boo's having some neurologic issues and I really need to focus on him for now. Thanks so much for being so understanding-it is appreciated so much more than you all will ever know.

Patriotic Pocket Dipes

I've listed the first of several patriotic themed pocket diapers last night. It's an XL so it will fit from 30-45 pounds roughly. The Etsy Cloth Diaper Team theme this month is "patriotic" so we can cover US and Canada and any other country we want to represent. I've to 2 more cut out and waiting to be sewn hopefully today and tomorrow. I plan to make the others in preschool sizes though I may cut out a few mediums since they sell pretty well for me too. I can't wait to see all these little bums in red, white, & blue!

I've been so busy with the sick kids that I've gotten nothing listed in ages! They are still not better but not getting worse so I should be able to finish all the "almost finished" things and get them listed. There should be a few more diapers and some g-tube pads for boys and girls.
I really need the "break" sewing gives me (and a few sales wouldn't hurt either...goodness the economy is crummy!). I also have a few more fabrics to list that I know I honestly will not use so I'm listing them too. Check things out later this weekend to see what I get listed! Hope everyone had a great week! :)

OK, I've got the shop open again but I just can't do any custom orders right now. I have 2 sick kiddos and just can't get the time to sew. I'm adding ready to ship things so that's all I'm going to have for a while. I hope it won't be too long before I can do custom orders again since I know I've got at least 3 people waiting on me to open the slots. I promise I'll open them as soon as I can but with the sick kids it's keeping me tired and burned out so I'm waiting. I don't have time to sew and I refuse to accept an order knowing I have no idea how long it could take me. That's not fair to the buyer or my family. Thanks to everyone who is being so patient with us. I really appreciate it!

April Is...

April is Autism Awareness month! Please take a few minutes to learn about the many different forms of Autism.
Asperger's Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), and other forms of autism are occurring at alarming rates in our young people. Approximately 1 out of every 150 children will be diagnosed with some form of Austism.
My daughter was misdiagnosed as ADHD and later was correctly diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Unfortunately, due to the slow diagnosing, she is no longer eligible for some of the programs that would have helped her tremendously in school and life.
Most people who meet my daughter have no idea she is living her life with Asperger's Syndrome. I'm sure there are a lot of people who think she's just a brat or needs more discipline. She's very "black or white", the "gray area" just isn't there. Thankfully she is on the milder end of the spectrum and doesn't have as many problems as those who are more severe. Daily I wish her educators would learn more about Autism spectrum disorders-I give every teacher who has her some information from the Mayo Clinic. It's a great place to start. Unfortunately most just set it aside and we have many unnecessary problems throughout the entire year because they "didn't know this is part of how an Aspergers child behaves or thinks" or "Aspergers is just an excuse-she should know better" (that one really irritates me-she would know if YOU'D TEACH HER!).
I'm asking everyone to take a moment to look at any one of the following sites and spend a few minutes reading about this rapidly growing issue. Our kids don't need "fixed". They need to be taught using different methods. They are square pegs people are trying to fit into round holes.

Some changes for my shop

I love my custom requests and I love my family.....not always the best mix though. Since there is only one of me, I have decided to no longer post listings for custom orders. However, I just can't stop taking them so I've decided to continue to do them but only when someone contacts me. I've got so many youth and adult undies waiting to be sewn that I'm going to start working on them and only do customs if requested.
I also am going to rephrase how my custom times are figured. I want to be sure that everone understands that 2 weeks is 2 business weeks so they don't count the weekends since I don't work on Saturday and Sunday. I just need to be able to spend more quality time with my family and can't if I'm working on custom orders and sewing for my shop. Summer break is coming up so quickly and I will have both kids home plus all the summer therapy sessions will keep me out more.
Streamlining my shop will allow me to keep making quality products and since they will already be done when they're listed they will go out to you faster. My custom orders will flow better too since I will be able to keep control of what come in and when it will be ready to ship. My plan is that this will make a better situation for all of us and keep the product quality too.

New soaker fabric

I've just received my shipment of Zorb. I am really pretty happy with this stuff. I've used it in several of Boo's diapers and training pants. It is a hidden layer directly beneath the layer that goes against the skin. It's like that super absorbant ShamW** stuff but made for diapers. It does hold alot and is really trim. This means that 1 layer of that is like about 4 layers of flannel or 2 layers of hemp/cotton or microfiber. I've had pretty good luck using 1 layer of Zorb with 2-3 layers of either hemp/cotton or microfiber. This lets the undies be really trim but still really absorbant. My understanding is that it is best to use no more than 2 layers of Zorb though because you lose any extra help after that. I think 1 sewn in layer and 1 in the insert works great. It does need to have another fabric though because it has a "squish" factor. When it's compressed (sitting or laying on the layer) it doesn't hold as well. If you have another absorbant fabric that may not absorb as quickly it helps. Together they have tons of holding power! I can't wait to get a few things up that are ready to ship with this stuff in them. Have a great weekend everyone!

Thankfully we are all better now. This crazy cough is still hanging around be everyone is better and I'm even finally getting the sewing room rearranged so it's more effecient and usable.

Pneumonia!

OK, the kids have both had pneumonia for the last 3 weeks. I've been fighting it off but last week it finally won. I've been down and out for the last 7-8 days but with the help of Augmentin 875 I'm finally starting to feel better.
I'm slowly working on the last 3 of the custom orders that came in during the previous 2 weeks. I will be sewing some this weekend so I can get them out during the first part of the week.
I think I will be putting a hold on custom orders next week to give me time to finish up everything. If you hit the shop and want a custom order, please be patient. I'm starting them up again on March 16, 2009.

Custom Orders

I've decided that I don't post regularly enough so here's the plan. I'm going to set up posts for 1 or 2 times each week and I'll post pictures of things I've done during the week. Some times it will be a custom order other times just something I've decided to add to the shop. This will keep me busy (like I really need that ;D ) and everyone can see what's new in the shop.

This week I finished a custom order for 2 newborn and 6 large infant diapers. I'm not posting names for privacy sake (I'm big on HIPPA-even when it's not medically related).

I really like the way they came out and I hope the mamma who ordered them does too. She requested girl prints for the newest baby and boy for the the larges. I tried to get prints for the larges that are boy but still neutral enough for the girl later if needed. After all, one of the reasons we use cloth is to be able to diaper more than 1 child with them.

OK, now I've got to get the listing for the Etsy Cloth Diaper promo up so stay tuned for pics of that next....

KCK One Training Pants

I just completed the licensee paperwork and should be good to go in the next few days. If you've been to the shop don't worry...Boo's sick but we're home now so as soon as I get the last 2 custom orders out (in the next few days) I'm adding a few of these in different sizes. I'll be re-opening the shop tomorrow sometime.

Here's a few pictures so you can see what a SOPO (snap on pull off) looks like. They're really trim and I like the pocket in the back so an insert can be added if needed. I'm making these ready to go and custom so just let me know what your favorite combination is and we can get your order ready!

My new family blog!

I've decided to separate my work and family related posts so I'm starting another blog. It's been on my "to do" list for awhile but there never seems to be time. Today I just DID IT. :)
Now those of you who come here to see things relating to my Etsy shop no longer have to read about "what the kids did over the weekend" or "Gracie's latest Aspie issue". Seriously though I really want to let this be about what I can supply to help families like mine and keep our family stuff separate. Now let's just hope I can find the time to keep with both. Pull On Styles are coming!

I've had soooo many people want to know if I have pull on style "absorbent undies" that I've decided to get licensed for the new KCK One patterns. I'm ordering them this weekend and hope to put up a few ready mades as well as the custom slots in the next 2 weeks. They have snaps or hook & loop on the side seams for easy removal but still pull on & off if desired. I also just got some more PUL in pale yellow, light green and baby blue so I'm thinking they will make wonderful ready made waterproof undies. These also have an inner welt pocket so you can add more inserts for more absorbency if you'd like. They are really nice. I made a few for my son to use at school and I'm waiting to see if they like them better than the diaper shaped ones.

Another thought-I've decided that I really don't care for calling my larger sized undergarments "diapers". Regardless of whether or not they are shaped like them-it implies "baby" to most and disable people aren't babies. They are simply differently-abled. With this in mind you will see that I am in the process of rewording my listings to state something like "absorbent undies" instead of diapers. Even those with challenged minds still wish to be treated with respect. Bladder/bowel control issues should not be demeaning. :)
Now if life will continue to cooperate I can finish my custom orders and put up a few ready-made KCK's!

OK, I have once again become the most disorganized person! Everything is a mess and I can't take it. It hasn't helped that DH has been laid off for 2 months and DD & DS are out of school due to snow for the last week.
I've decided to go back to using a homemanagement binder. I started using one early last year and once I got started it was WONDERFUL! Things got done and I wasn't overwhelmed every day. Well, too many trips to the hospital and laziness on my part (yes, I admit it-I got lazy!) and now it's all a mess again. I need a simple system that anyone can fall into my shoes can follow. I found an e-book for under $9 that got me started. I tweeked it for me & life was much simpler. I've seen it put into a card file instead of a large binder and that was really cool too but it would be lost in our house-guaranteed.
I spent last night with the old binder out going thru all of what I had and deciding what will & what won't still work. It wasn't as hard as I thought. Most things just needed updates for our current needs. I don't use all of the sections in the e-book since some don't apply but they are a reaaly nice staring point. I have also begun researching other types of checklists for cleaning. I need something to keep me on the right track and there are so many great ideas out there.
I find my creativity goes out the window when I get stressed. A messy house is STRESS. Now it's probably gonna take me a few weeks to fix this mess but I've learned to not try to do it all in a day or two. It didn't happen that way & I can't fix it that fast. Don't think I haven't tried-it never happens and I get too frazzled.

It's a great starting point and she's got a lot of information about making this "yours". I have the previous version but it's been updated now and I'm thinking about getting the newer version because it's that good.
Simplemom.net also have some great checklists and ideas to incorporate into this. Just remember it will never be "finished". It should evolve as you do, parts will come and go as needed or not used. My challenge was to tweek it for a special needs family-try one of these if you find yourself feeling scattered. It doesn't have to be a binder, the card box is one of several options that take up very little space. I like the idea of having a 31 daybox and just rotating out the day as needed. Pretty nice way to keep track of things, huh. Good luck and God bless!

CPSIA is delayed!

CPSIA legislation is delayed until 2010. Thankfully we have been given a reprieve. I know all the WAHP (work at home people) want our kids safe-which is why we do this. We are compliant with no lead containing fabrics and such. Now they are going to take the time to clarify what has to be tested and what is exempt. I am all for legislation like this if it is implemented PROPERLY and THOUGHTFULLY. It looks like now Congress will take the time to really look at what they need to accomplish and how to best do that without putting thousands of people out of work in the process. Thanks you Lord!

Frustration is setting in....

OK, this is totally off the shop subject but this blog is about the kiddies too so here goes.
Nikolas is really not doing as well as he could on the commercial formulas (too much vomiting). We've tried almost all of them. Frankly I'm over it. I asked about putting him on a homemade blenderized formula-I mean asked like 4 different doc's of his. All of them are fine with it. (We started this back at the end of summer but then he had unexpected brain surgery a week in & we stopped.)
Now I start looking for recipes that a good quality blender can handle ('cause there is no way on earth I can afford a Vitamix). We are planning to continue to use Pediasure for the "milk/dairy" portion but that way he only gets 2 cans instead of 5. Plus when he ate more pureed foods and less formula he didn't get sick nearly as often. Like his pediatrician said-"we really aren't meant to survive on commercial formulas anyway".
All the doctors recommend using a nutritionist to be sure I'm not missing anything but also agree that if I'm still adding 2 cans of Pediasure we should be fine. The nutritionists at St. Vincent are waiting for me to give them the recipes but I'm just having a frustrating time finding any and my mind is not giving any great ideas either.
Since he's decided he likes to eat some orally I'm back to pureeing carrots, peas, green beans, asparagus (-which surprisingly he LOVES!), peaches, pears, apricots, sweet potatoes, spinach, mixed frozen berries and frozen strawberries. I give him whatever he'll eat orally then throw the rest into the blender and away we go. We also use V8 veggie juice and V8 fruit/veggie juices instead of just water to thin for the tube.
I've been told to try the Food Pyramid Gov't site for help but they can only tell me how many of each group to get. I already have that info.
There is a book called "Homemade Blended Formula Handbook" that I want to see. I'm more than willing to buy it but I want to see it first to be sure it's what I need. It's impossible to find that book USED! I've looked everywhere and got nothing. I can't find other recipes either. I know that I can use anything if I get a Vitamix but who can afford them really! They're over $450 each-it's a BLENDER for cryin' out loud.
I don't mind taking the time to do this but good grief they don't make it even close to easy to do.
(Can you tell I'm getting frustrated!?!) I used to blend food for both kids as babies but when they get older and need more meat it's difficult to get that fine enough, and I can't have an enormous volume to feed either. I suppose I'm back to the govt website to see what else besides peanut butter and tofu I can substitute for the needed nutrients. Grains are giving me fits too. Any Vegetarians-PLEASE help me out here!

KCK One Larger sizes & CPSIA

I'm finally getting a few new things listed....YEA!! Actually, I opened up 2 listings for the new KCKOne Large Child and Tween sizes. I'm finally getting caught up on a (very) few things around here, thus getting ready to sew up all the precut items I have. I think a few large child and tween diapers will be listed soon.

I'm only going to do a few since there are new "rules" going into effect on Feb 10, 2009. They're going to require testing for each batch of items for lead. My problem is that, while I want our kids protected, all my things are individual and unique so "batch testing" is impossible and seriously expensive. Most of us that make handmade are hoping that the Feds get things fixed and only require the testing slips for the componants. Lets get real, if each componant passed testing then why is it necessary to test the final product. I mean these are diapers folks! They go on the bum not in the mouth and if all the parts are lead free or within the miniscule proportions then the final product will be too. Lets hope all the fuss we are raising will get realistic rules and regs. I will be compliant but at a huge cost if they don't fix this mess. It will mean that I cannot produce anything intended for anyone under age 12. Bummer!!

I'm really nervous about this and contacted our IN state reps...guess what-they have NO CLUE about what is exempt and what isn't. This legislation was orginally for toys and such but seems to have extended to ANYTHING for those under age 12. For those who are as confused as I am, this legislation was passed earlier this year because of the lead paint in toys and bibs from China. I want my kids safe-thus buying handmade from here in the US by WAHP's (work at home persons). The legislation was vague (to be polite!) and passed quietly. We, the general public, were told about the basics but not a firm list of what products were included. Most people thought it is just for toys-NOPE. The legislators figured they'd tweek it and come up with specifics later. Well later is here and they haven't finished it. Search "National Bankruptcy Day" and see what you find. Scary. On the upside there is some reform getting atleast thought about. I just got a legislation proposal link in my email and it talks about some of the testing & possible exclusions. Natural fibers like cotton, silk, wool, hemp & linen are excluded provided they are not dyed in any way. That's nice but my concern is now what other items even need testing? No one can seem to decide.

I'm just going to keep praying that certifications on the fabrics will be enough to make my products legal so I can keep selling for everyone. Otherwise it's only for those 12 & up after 2/10/09. Your prayers (and calls to legislators!) will be VERY APPRECIATED by everyone with little ones, especially small US businesses. We all want our kids safe. Plus, I don't want everything available to be from China or Vietnam (they can afford the testing) and not by the small business here. My money wants to stay in the US economy all the way around. Yea!! My new machine is due here via UPS on 12/3/08. This means that I should have atleast several pairs of g-tube pads ready to immediate shipment-just in time for Christmas! I'm working on them now and sometimes my sewing machine decides it will work so I can get 1 or 2 done before I need to fix it again. The stitches are fine but the machine decides to tie up the bobbin threads every so often so I can't finish until I take it apart and fix it. The new machine will be a blessing and maybe I'll get lucky & it will be here sooner than planned. (keeping fingers crossed and prayers going!)

Sewing machine death!

Grrrrr....just when I get things ready to sew (and have orders waiting!) BOTH machines die. As irritating as that is I did buy a new one last night and it's on it's way so I should have it here by Tuesday. I'm just irritated that I can't get things done on the weekend for Cyber-Monday. I am planning to have a few larger sized items ready for the holidays (as long as no one disrupts the plans again). If anyone would like to see anything special in the shop let me know. My machine isn't here but I can get things cut out and ready (& the serger is here to do some of the seams on pants and such). Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Official KCKOne Larger Sizes License is HERE!!

It's official! I can sell the KCKOne Larger Sizes in my Etsy shop. While I continue to do the "happy dance" I'm prepping the pattern and getting ready to cut out a couple. I will be including 1 soaker with each pocket diaper and will also offer additional soakers in separate listings. The sizes for these are:
Large Child- 4-10 years
Tween- 6-14 years
Adult- 25-40" waist
Large Adult- 34-50" waist
I am currently using this diaper on Nikolas and it is my FAVORITE! The school can't mess these up so they got 2 thumbs up from all of us, even his teacher & aides liket them. I think one of my favorite things is that these will grow with him so I don't need to "make more" in 2 years. I'll just have to come up with another excuse to keep buying all the great fabrics for his diapers. :D
I am licensed for the larger sizes on my website, however not the infant/toddler size (I can sell those locally though). Currently they only allow 15 online sites for the smaller sizes and I got my license too late. No worries though-I'm really in this for those of us who have bigger kids and are tired of, don't want to use, or unable to use the disposables.
Personally I'm really getting into this whole going green thing. I mean it's really not nearly as hard or time consuming as I thought it would be and look at what wonderful things we are doing for our kids. Just my 2 cents. Have a great day!!

New listings-Diaper making kits

I have decided that in order to get more fabrics, for my kiddos new things and thin my ever-growing stash of fabric, I am going to offer "diaper cut kits". These will be large sized diaper cuts of PUL and an inner fabric. All you need is the type of fabric you prefer for the center soaking part, notions like thread & elastic, and a pattern. If you don't have a pattern I'll be more than happy to suggest a few I've tried and LOVE! I figure that this will allow my stash to thin and you to have tons of different prints and colors on your little one's bum. If you are sewing for a larger child, tween or adult-let me know. I can make a custom larger sized cut for you. I know those can be quite hard to find.I'm also going to offer cuts of soaker fabrics like hemp french terry and plush microfiber (way better than the auto towels we get at the discount stores!).

Boo ended up in the hospital again so all orders went on hold....again. Thankfully we're home reasonably healthy. I'm just about ready to say "only ready made" for awhile. Anyway I'm getting caught up and things are going out this weekend so I feel a bit better. If you're one of those who got stuck in this I am truly sorry and will get your items out ASAP!

On a much happier note I got to catch up on some blog reading and found the most wonderful post from Angie (Audrey Caroline's mommy). It's a 7x7 post. It's a list of 7 prayers we should pray over our children. They are 7 times each day and the challenge is to do it for 7 days (or more :D ). Please join me in prayer for our children. God has wonderful things in store for all of us and with prayer anything is possible. Also please thank God for the miracle he performed in baby Stellan who was born so very HEALTHLY!!!!! Recent News & temporary changes

OK, my surgery went fine but it's been a LOT harder to recover this time. You'd think it would be simple since it was just a laporoscopy-a few small incisions and a few stitches. HA! No such luck. Now I'm swollen and can't climb the stairs very well so I can't even get to my sewing machines. I have 1 downstairs-it's my older one and it needs serviced. I thought I'd be "cute" and go upstairs anyway and use my new one. Bobbin threads everywhere when I sew. It's a computerized sewing/embroidery machine and it looks like it needs to be taken in too. I've cleaned them as well as I can but.....GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!
I'm gonna put this down to God telling me to take a short break and give myself some more time to heal. I'm just going to stop taking custom orders and sewing diapers for a few weeks. Hopefully that will allow me to heal and get these machines worked on. They really don't like the thicker/plush diaper fabrics very much. I'm considering a commercial machine instead of another less expensive one. Maybe I can find one gently used.
Well anyway I hope to start taking custom orders again in November-we'll see. Have a wonderful weekend!

FOE finally here-YEA!!!

OK so here's the deal. I didn't get hardly any diapers ready & posted for the promotion we did at the end of September. :(
I just didn't have enough FOE. It was on order but didn't make it here in time. The foe (elastic binding) is finally here! Better late than never. :)
I missed having a bunch of diapers posted for the Real Cloth Diaper week but now I can finish all the ones that are cut out and waiting for FOE. Now I can also finish the trainers I've working on too. Yippee!
Now I just need to find the time to get all this sewing done. I suppose this means that I will have plenty to post over the next few weeks.

Enough about that-it's too much planning for this late at night. I will also be MIA during the middle of October. I'm due for (a relatively simple) surgery but it will keep me in the bed for awhile and doing only easy things for a bit after I'm allowed to get up. No sewing then...grrrr...after I finally get my supplies and the momentum and some "free" time......

Ahhh well it's past my bedtime and we've got church tomorrow so I'll update as I can. I'll also post here when I get the new stuff listed on Etsy. Have a wonderful night everyone!

"REAL DIAPER WEEK" has started!

I know I just posted about this but you've got to hit the blog and see what's being offered! The selection is amazing. Many of the shops have tons already in them, others are like me and posting thru the week.
I'm going to try to get several more items in this weekend and custom orders are always welcome. There are some seriously cute products that are VERY easy to use just waiting to be on your little one's bum!
If you have older toddlers and children who use diapers, be it for bedtime only or all day, we can help you out there too. Why waste money on disposable pull ups and nighttime undies, still end up washing the wet PJ's and bedding, when you can buy 3 or 4 pairs of reusables and have them for as long as you need them.
I've got 6 different colored child/youth sized diapers (equal to a size 8-12 in kids) that will post, hopefully, this weekend sometime. (I'm still putting the closures on them.) Some will have snaps, others touch tape (like velcro but stronger). For those with bed wetters, I can make them pull on style so they don't look like diapers. These undies/diapers are waterproof on the outside, have elastic binding around the waist and legs, and if you prefer snaps they will match the outer fabric so they blend in. I'm also about 1/2 way done with 4 that fit little ones in 3T-6X range. If you need or want specific colors or patterns just contact me and I'll make a custom listing for you. Have a great weekend and try out a few of these. After all you'll only need a few to replace tons of disposables. It's money well saved-trust me I've been doing it for years. :D

Yes, I know that's longer than a week but we wanted to be sure to get both weekends so everyone can get the chance to try out cloth for their special ones. Etsy Cloth Diaper Team is running this and most of our members should be participating. This promotion is an excellent way to get familiar with the newest types of cloth diapers. They are definitely not like they used to be! They are now as simple as disposables (some are easier if you ask me :D ). They last for multiple children if you care for them. They are also much less expensive in the long run. Trust me-I've been using cloth on Nikolas since we left the NICU (over 4 yrs ago) and only spent about $550 on diapers plus maybe $300 in washing and care for 4+ years-that includes the energy, laundry soap, etc. I thought since he's gonna be in diapers indefinitely why not. I mean honestly, who wants to sit on paper 24/7? (think about how yucky that monthly disposable pad feels!)

We're finally home!

OK, I didn't have any time to get this posted before or during this ordeal so here's the scoop. Mikayla got sick-sinus infection on 8/19 then Nikolas "couldn't let her have all the fun" and got sick too. Well he was throwing up anything we gave him, including his medicines. Not good since they are for seizures. Well the Peds doctor sent us to St. Vincent on Wed 8/20. We figured-over night IV fluids to prevent dehydration and we'd be home. HA! No such luck. His usual shunt series (to be sure it's working & not the cause of the illness) showed one of his cysts in his brain had grown. WONDERFUL!! (grrrrrr...) That meant that we'd be staying over the weekend and have brain surgery on Monday. PEACHY!! Now we're here 'til Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Nope. He's now classified as a "slow metabolizer". In other words the narcotic pain medicines he got (tylenol with codeine) cannot be processed by his body like they should and almost killed him. Well he come thru ok and we got to leave Friday early afternoon.
On a much sadder note. Please pray for the family of Jacob Brokering (preschool aide's nephew). He had surgery at the same time on Monday and passed away on Wednesday from complications. He was 15 and also special needs. Also please pray for the family of Kelsey and Aaron Mock. Aaron was 38 & a single dad of a 12yr old girl in my daughter's grade. He died very unexpectedly this past Wednesday. I found out because on of my closest friends was his ex-fiance. My daughter found out at school because Kelsey was absent for the last few days.

Well I've gotten lots of positive feedback on this style so you should see it in my shop shortly! I'm diaper sewing like crazy and have about 16 pairs of g-tube pads waiting for their turn at the machine. I feel like I've not gotten anything finished this summer but school starts in 2 1/2 weeks so we're on a schedule again. Thank goodness! Regular time for things simply makes my life easier. I'm also working toward a license for the KCKOne in larger sizes. I probably won't carry the infant sizes but I am looking forward to being a provider for the larger child thru Adult sizes. I'll let you know when I get approved. :D

What's new??

Well the mini-vacation was nice but way too short! Oh well, next year we'll try for another 1 weeker.

I've added a new style of diaper to all of my sizes. It's based on a Rita's Rump (THANKS!!) with a few modifications. It sits a bit under the belly and a bit higher in the back. I'm offering it in flannel or with a PUL (waterproof) outer layer and birdseye or flannel inner. It has either hemp/cotton or microfiber terry for the soaker based on preference & availability. I will also have additional soakers with velour tops available. I've got the infant thru youth pattern ready and adult sizes are almost done. I'm hoping to have some sewn, "ready to ship", and listed by this weekend. I'm also nearly finished with several g-tube pads that will be ready to mail as well. I'm cutting back on the custom orders, but not stopping, until school starts again so I can spend more time with the kiddies. Have a great week everyone!

A "MINI-VACATION" this week!! :D

My wonderful husband has surprised me with a mini-vacation! We are taking our kids and our daughter's friend to Holiday World for 2 days of fun and relaxation. I'm sooooo excited! We're even staying at the Santa Claus lodge. It's totally Christmas themed I guess. (Well, atleast we're not expected to buy Christmas gifts!) Our daughter just "had" to stay there. After all it's Santa Claus Indiana. Don't we know anything. Hehehe. She just turned 12 last week but you'd think she was 5 again. :D
This will be nice though. We've only been on 1 family vacation before. It was before our son was born. I've taken the kids 3 years ago to Disney World but my parents went not Daddy. This is a short trip (3 hour drive) and it's only 2 days but so much better than nothing. It almost didn't happen because our lift van broke down but we all need the break and my parents are so sweet as to loan us their van so we can still go. I'll post a few pictures when we get back.

I've been so busy with life and family that I've been really bad about keeping my shop stocked. There have been a great deal of challenges hitting our home recently. We've had health problems with both my mother, my children and my mother-in-law. My son's 2 1/2 yr old dog (who we were training to help us with him) got very sick and passed away very unexpectedly. We miss you so much Maximillian (Max the wonder doggie!). I know some don't see the reason for such sadness-"it's only a dog". Not for us-Max and our other pets are family members. They are loved as much as our children. I've planted a beautiful rose bush for him and another will go in (if it ever stops raining here) for our other lost doggie-Sadie Mae. She passed during my pregnancy with Nikolas.

I am working on a current order and getting ready to get some instock items finished. I am adding several new cloth diapers in a range of sizes. I am also happy to add a new diaper "Nikolas" in honor of my son. This diaper is higher in the back, slightly lower in the front and comes with an additional snap in soaker. It works wonderfully for those wheelchair bound kiddos and doesn't give "plumber rear" for those who lay on the floor and scoot around. :D

I've take the best parts of several different patterns I've seen, used or simply just like the look of and meshed them all together. This diaper will come in several sizes but I am getting the large, XL, and youth ready first. Larges will fit about a 2t-3t, XL will be 3T-5T and youth fits sizes 5-7/8. They have multiple snap settings across the front for a lot of adjustability. Please remember all sizes are approximate since we are all shaped a bit differently. I will post measurements to help when selecting a size. These will be available for custom orders and I will also have some listed that are ready to ship. If life stays calm, I'm hoping to have these ready and listed on both Etsy and Ebay in the next 4-6 weeks.

I've gotten a new serger!!

YEA!!! I've finally gotten a new serger so I am working on adding LOTS of new items to my shop. I had hoped to have more in before now and it just didn't happen. Life got in the way-of course. Nikolas had an outpatient procedure last week, which went very well, and I got really behind in my homework for college. I'm caught up now and working on a few custom orders as well as getting ready to restock the shop. Be sure to check back frequently because I'm getting ready to add some "ready to ship" clothing and cloth diapers in larger sizes as well as more g-tube pads. These things will be already complete-just packed and shipped to you!

I usually don't like to say that so I'll be more specific. :D I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and will have a Happy New Year! I also realize many other holidays fall this month so for those of different beliefs...have very Happy Holidays!

There have been many requests for weighted vests and onsies for older toddlers and children. I am working to get them up and available early in 2008. I have one of those little ones who loves to "pull on the tube" so a onsie style t-shirt is first on my list. I'm honestly not sure how long it will be since I am back in school part time starting in mid-January. My goal is to have it done before school starts so lets hope it works. I do know that it will be a simple shirt that snaps someway in the crotch so if you have snap crotch pants it will be easy to access for diaper changes. I am also considering an access patch on the front so you won't have to unsnap the bottom to feed or give meds. I'd love some feedback from you tube feeding parents! I think that will be an option rather than a standard. I am also thinking of having them listed (ready to ship) on both Etsy & EBay, along with custom ones on Etsy. Lots to think about. On a less cheerful note..the cost of good quality fabrics is getting higher. I'm not turning ANY profit on the things I am making. Litterally less than the cost of my time for nearly everything. I'm, unfortunately, going to be raising my prices for most items beginning Jan 1, 2008. I hate to do that since I know how expensive having a special needs child is but I barely cover the cost of materials and shipping and there is nothing left for my time/profit. I am going to do my best to continue to keep them low but I've got to make some profit or I can't keep doing this as I will have to go back to work outside the home. This is so much more satisfying so I'm going to try to find that balance. Thanks for understanding!

Reopening my Ebay listings too

After much deliberation, I have decided to begin listing on Ebay again in January 2008. The Etsy store will remain open for my custom work and some ready to ship items. My Ebay will be listing for ready to ship items for special needs such as weighted blankets and snap-crotch pants in children and youth sizes (maybe some Adult sizes too). I will be selling my Ebay items under the user ID kittypal10. Sometime during the spring I have plans to open a store on Ebay but not immediately. I am hoping this will allow more people to access the items I create and sell for their special loved ones. I am hoping to start a once monthly newsletter with information about my specials and other shop related topics. Keep an eye open for lots of new items on both places!

It's Christmas time

I really love this time of year! Everyone is trying to be nice to everyone else and things are looking brighter (even if they really aren't). Maybe it's just the thought of all the good times and family gatherings we all are having.
I love to give the gifts to my friends and family (hate shopping-crowds aren't my thing). I think my favorite part are the decorations and the music. I love seeing all the lights and all the hard work people put into making their place special for everyone to see.
I haven't gotten the first decoration up yet :( which is really unusual for me. Normally,by now if it doesn't move it's decorated! But we're painting (YEA!!) after the remodel so I'll have to wait a bit longer. I told Jim that I'm decorating by the 17at the very latest so we've gotta get on it.
I have to say, just having all the drywall up and the basics done has really got me feeling better. Now that the bulk of the remodel is finished I can see that light at the end of the tunnel.
For those who don't know-we gutted the entire house and have been remodeling and living in it at the same time. I DON'T recommend that! We made the entire main level handicapped accessible for our son and my mother-in-law. Tore out old plaster (this house is 100 yrs old) and put in new wiring and drywall, widened doorways, and reshaped rooms. That is a horribly messy job. Remodeled the main bath and put in a new second bath with roll in shower to accommodate both wheelchairs. Now mil doesn't need her chair and has gotten to move back to her house so it's mainly for our son. He's still a little small but this will be nice as he gets older.
It's finally beginning to be at a point where I can put things away in their real "homes" and get this place organized. Which has now become my current project, aside from the custom orders on Etsy.

Time for restocking, finally

I'm finally taking the time to get the things in the shop for the Christmas shopping. I hope I don't miss this. I've got some really nice ideas for our friends and family. Hopefully I can generate some great sales too. I'll post as soon as I get more in the shop. I'm also adding a few more ready to ship items for special needs people. I'm going to add medical pads (they fit around g-tubes and such), and some premade lap pads and weighted vests. Holiday time is getting here quickly. We need all the help we can get so pass this on!

We're finally home. In & out of the hospital stinks but the seizures are controlled and the g-tube is in and working well. Nikolas is pretty confortable and eating well. Now it's time to clean, clean, clean, study , study more and then sew, sew, sew my self into relaxation! Thanks for all the prayers for those of you who did. We really appreciate them. OK after several days in the PICU for seizures they have sent us home. That's the good news. The bad news is that we get to go back less than 48 hours from now. We have to be there on Mon at 11am to get a feeding tube. They wouldn't do it while we were there and couldn't justify us staying or bringing the GI doc's in on a Sat. Boy will I be glad when life isn't on hold any more.

I'm finally making a bit of progress! I got a new bag finished & posted today. I'd love to see it sold in the next few days 'cause it's a Halloween print. It's a really nice bag-I may keep it for myself instead of storing it for next season if it does't sell.

They finally set Boo's surgery date. He'll get his feeding tube and then hopefully eating will be a better experience for all of us.

I decided that it was time to join the 21st century and start a blog. I plan to make this mostly related to my shop but it will also contain things outside of Etsy. Since it's getting closer to the holiday season it's time to begin putting all the fun holiday things into my shop. I started putting in my Halloween totes today and hope that they are well liked. They were a blast to create. I love all the cute fabrics available for the holiday seasons. I have tons of Halloween prints and lots of ideas but would love to get some custom requests for the kids.
